How to Identify and Prevent Gum Disease

Sep 26, 2023

Good oral health is an important part of your overall health and well-being. Gum disease is a common problem that can put your oral health at risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost half of all adults aged 30 years and older show some signs of gum disease. Keep reading to understand the symptoms of this condition and how to prevent it.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is caused by the growth of bacteria between the teeth and in the gum line. These bacteria will grow when good dental hygiene is neglected. When the bacteria are allowed to grow for long periods of time, they will start eating into the soft tissue of the gums. This can cause a lot of problems which manifest in a few symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

The first sign of gum disease is usually bleeding gums when you brush your teeth. This is caused by the inflammation that that bacteria is causing. The gums will swell and become sensitive and reddened. This sensitivity will lead to pain, another common symptom. If you notice your gums hurting when you brush your teeth or eat, you may have the very early stages of gum disease. You should seek out a general dentist office for treatment.

In very severe cases of gum disease, teeth may even start to shift in the gums. This is because as the gum disease progresses, the gum tissue is gradually destroyed. The teeth need gum tissue to anchor into, so if gum tissue is lost, there is no strong anchor to attach to.

A symptom that will be apparent to others is bad breath. Any time bacteria is allowed to grow, it will cause an unpleasant smell. If you notice changes in your breath, along with the other symptoms of gum disease, you should visit a general dentist office for treatment.

How Do I Prevent Gum Disease?

You can prevent gum disease or slow the progression of gum disease by practicing good dental hygiene. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. This will remove much of the bacteria from between your teeth that accumulates throughout the day.

If you're worried you may be suffering from gum disease, don't hesitate to make an appointment with a general dentist office. You can call the office of Robert B. Hurley, DDS today for a dentist with more than 30 years of experience. We will be happy to help you with all of your dental needs!
